Discussion:
[ANN] moving BBEdit-Talk to Google Groups!

Good afternoon folks,

We're currently in the process of moving all our product discussion lists
to Google Groups.

Next weekend (June 7/8), we will shut this list down and all traffic will
be on the 'BBEdit Talk' Google Group. We hope you'll take a moment to
subscribe and join us there!

<http://groups.google.com/group/bbedit>

Please note that historical archives of this list are not currently
available through the Google group. We're investigating ways to get the
archives up to Google. In the meantime, they remain available via
<http://www.listsearch.com/BBEdit> at the pleasure of LassoSoft, whose
hosting of the archives these many years we greatly appreciate.

Regards,

Patrick Woolsey

It's in the membership settings for the BBEdit Talk list on http://groups.google.com/

You may need to configure your alternate addresses in the settings
somewhere.

No, it's not. I've spent the last 45 minutes trying to figure this out,
associating various email addresses to my gmail account, but still unable to
dictate which email address should be receiving the messages from the Google
Group. This is really, really frustrating.

Does anyone have some instructions they'd be willing to type out for me?

Rod,

I'm looking at the Associated Emails that I have for that account,
there are 2 email addresses plus my original GMail account. They've
been verified.

Is there a step that I am missing between entering the Emails in to
Personal Information under "My Account" and verifying them and the
point where you are at?

Responded, and it thanked me.

At this point, the system does not recognize my alternate email

Ok, I figured it out.

I don't know if it's a problem with Safari, or something internal in
Google, but I had to sign out and log back in. As soon as I did it, I
saw my alternate emails listed as expected.

So I suggest you follow Steve Saeedi's advice of:
1- Login to Google with your gmail account
2- Go to My Account in the top right
3- Edit My Personal Information
4- For each alternate email address you wish to add, enter them at the
"Associate email addresses with your account" section
5- You will need to receive the confirmation email and reply to that.
6- Once confirmed and entered, you will have the option to choose
which address you want to use to receive the BBEdit Talk stuff.

But split 6 up:
6 - Confirm Emails
7 - Log out of Google
8 - Log back in
9 - Find your emails listed in the "Edit my Membership" portion of the
Group page.

That is all :)

Click "Create a filter" (by the "Search the Web" button)
From: ***@googlegroups.com
Click "Next Step"
Forward to <me>, Mark as read

We'll see how well this works. May need some add'l tweaking post-
switch.

You may need to configure your alternate addresses in the settings

Any specifics? I have joined the new group but have not yet figured out
how to tell Google to deliver my subscription to any other than my gmail
account.

Have found how to use gmail to send using another return address but
not yet how to deliver subscriptions to a non-gmail address.

You can also set up another Google account with a non-gmail email address and join the BBEdit-Talk group from there.
I just discovered that when I went to add the secondary email address, and I already had it for another account sign-on. So I just subscribed to BBEdit-Talk from there. Done.

That's what I did too. That is, even though I have a Gmail account, I
used the Mike Conley method (if I may call it that) to create an

I specified my preferred email address and password, and I was done.
Mission accomplished.

Of course, the thing that really sucks rocks about Google Groups
(well, in addition to its flakey interface) is that the E-mail
digest I get is not in the required format to be read using
Mailsmith's Open Digest command, which means that I now get the
choice of

- Wading through all the crap included in the digest
contents, trying to actually read the text enclosed therein
(which was why I liked using Open Digest);

- Giving up on digests and being bombarded by separate
E-mails rather than infrequent digests so that I can scan them
using Mailsmith's Browser; or

- Using the inefficient and ugly Google-designed browser
interface instead of my nice, clean, easy-to-use Bare
Bones-designed E-mail client.

Feh.

as usual, the people who are unhappy are the loudest. To slightly
counter this. I personally am happy with the move to Google groups. Or
at least do not see anything negative about it. I am sure many others
feel similar, but if you are not unhappy, then usually you won't say

In the interest of keeping the list on topic and productive for
all subscribers, please direct any specific complaints or
comments you may have regarding the presentation or operation of
any of our lists to the list management, off list.
Nonspecifically complaining on the list about how unhappy you

We're currently in the process of moving all our product discussion lists
to Google Groups.
Next weekend (June 7/8), we will shut this list down and all traffic will
be on the 'BBEdit Talk' Google Group. We hope you'll take a moment to
subscribe and join us there!
<http://groups.google.com/group/bbedit>
What does Bare Bones suggest a a filter for the new Google Group(s)?

An example of the List-id: header that will be used is simplest for me. With the amount of junk mail sent to my list address I just have to have a filter in place and it's hard to find a first received message in the haystack of spam.

List-ID: <bbedit-talk.barebones.com>

Is the current sort item. Will it still exist? Will it be the same?

Filtering is client and/or user preference based, so there's no
universal answer. I happen to filter based on the addresses.

This seems unfortunate, considering the IETF introduced the List-Id
header so that mail software could identify the list regardless of the
host serving it <http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2919.html>. Any chance
you can fix it on the new lists?

Hey,

I'm trying to wrap my head around everything. Here's what I have so
far.

A client gives me a list of 30 domains that he wants websites setup,
dns and mail.

I decided it would be a great chance for me to learn filters and
scripts. I very quickly created the filters that output the zones,
httpd.conf syntax and the commands to create the root directories.
What I'm wondering is this: is there a way to create a worksheet from
unix filters and if not am I going to have to tie all of this together
using apple script?

Here's the flow I am looking for:

Paste list of domains
run a script

the script will:
create the apache config syntax (one filter)
create the dns zone syntax (another filter)
create the shell script syntax to create the root directories for the
sites (third filter)
somehow create a worksheet
pipe the syntax along with shell commands over ssh (ssh keys are
working, no passwords needed)

Is this a pipe dream or can I actually achieve this in BBEdit?

Thanks!
Derek

Google h2n, or read DNS and Bind by Albitz and Liu.

I'm not familiar with h2n, what is it?

Why not just use h2n?

Hey,
I'm trying to wrap my head around everything. Here's what I have
so far.
A client gives me a list of 30 domains that he wants websites
setup, dns and mail.
I decided it would be a great chance for me to learn filters and
scripts. I very quickly created the filters that output the
zones, httpd.conf syntax and the commands to create the root
directories. What I'm wondering is this: is there a way to
create a worksheet from unix filters and if not am I going to have
to tie all of this together using apple script?
Paste list of domains
run a script
create the apache config syntax (one filter)
create the dns zone syntax (another filter)
create the shell script syntax to create the root directories for
the sites (third filter)
somehow create a worksheet
pipe the syntax along with shell commands over ssh (ssh keys are
working, no passwords needed)
Is this a pipe dream or can I actually achieve this in BBEdit?
Thanks!
Derek

Because I still need 2/3 of the solution if I do that. Either way,
the point is to get data from BBEdit to a remote server over ssh with
as little intervention as possible.

h2n isn't installed on the server, and the administrator would prefer
me not installing more utilities than is necessary. I already have
the zone files created, I just need a way of getting them from the
BBEdit filter to the server, along with httpd.conf entries and shell
script commands necessary to create the root directories.

It's more an exercise in BBEdit magic than something I'm going to use
a lot. I'm testing it to see what I can't do.

You could use AppleScript to upload the generated files with BBEdit (via
SFTP), or a shell script could upload them directly.

The main catch is that since these files must be installed into root-owned
locations, you'll need to access the server via an interactive shell to
move them into place and adjust their permissions--at present, there's no
way to do this from BBEdit.

For my own BBEdit knowledge that's a pipedream, but I know I don't use
BBEdit anywhere near it's capacity. I was just chatting with a buddy
yesterday and commented that I've been using BBEdit since it came with
MachTen around 1995, but I've never gotten into all of its Worksheet
and Scripting capabilities.

I'd give the client a password-protected web-form to fill in that
would then generate the info you need. You could also set up an email
address for the client that would process emails automatically and
generate the info. Or even an [s]ftp address they can send files to
that will run a periodic program to check for new files and process
them. Those are all certainly more work to setup, but considerably
less work in the long run. I pretty much do all of the above for a
living, so I'm a bit biased :-)

What does Bare Bones suggest a a filter for the new Google Group(s)?
An example of the List-id: header that will be used is simplest for
me. With the amount of junk mail sent to my list address I just have
to have a filter in place and it's hard to find a first received
message in the haystack of spam.
List-ID: <bbedit-talk.barebones.com>
Is the current sort item. Will it still exist? Will it be the same?
In Mail.app simply select a message from the list, Command-, to open
Preferences, go to the filter/rules tab and select your existing BBedit
rule, hit the + add button, pull down to List-ID, and Mail.app will
fill the argument field with the value found in the selected message.

Of course, but my problem which I'm sure applies to other BBEdit types who do coding, is that my mail filtering is done on the POP3 server under qmail. Unless I get the first test correct I never see a mailing list item on which to do that +add button operation. List-ID: works fine.

The option is to turn off filtering at the POP server temporarily but that can cause downloading of 1000 spams a day!

Please ask <***@same> If you'd like to see the code - it's done in perl. and uses post filtering options of qmail under open BSD. <ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Pair/qfilter_list.pl>

I've been running this procmail for many years and have only had one

due to a permission problem on the user's home folder.

Ugh, procmail code is so ugly and obtuse. That's why I wrote my own

if list-id contains bbedit.googlegroups.com then done

Um, no, it's not publicly available at this time. But at least I
tracked down the [greedy regexp] culprit that occasionally caused my
script to hang. :)

I have been assured that God uses sendmail. :-)
Some say proof is that not all prayers are answered. :-O

I use fetchmail to pull and deliver locally through procmail and
bogofilter. Postfix to push. And dovecot for my private IMAP server. On
FreeBSD 7.

Use mutt and vim more than anything else to reply.

Script run from crontab takes read messages from certain folders to
retrain bogofilter. Marked read messages in my spam folder are moved to
an archive in the event I want to retrain bogofilter (or Mail.app) from
ground zero.

In Mail.app I move Junk to my "add" folder on IMAP. Script on the server
then retrains bogofilter.

A problem with Mail.app is that moving a message out of the Junk folder
untrains the message from the junk database. Clearly a situation where
Apple is being *too* helpful. A solution was to select-all in Junk, cut,
then select the add folder and paste. That hasn't been working reliably
of late. Cuts OK, doesn't paste. So I give up and simply move.

Can't you just export/import a list of subscribers?
Post by Patrick Woolsey
Good afternoon folks,
We're currently in the process of moving all our product discussion lists
to Google Groups.
Next weekend (June 7/8), we will shut this list down and all traffic will
be on the 'BBEdit Talk' Google Group. We hope you'll take a moment to
subscribe and join us there!
<http://groups.google.com/group/bbedit>
Please note that historical archives of this list are not currently
available through the Google group. We're investigating ways to get the
archives up to Google. In the meantime, they remain available via
<http://www.listsearch.com/BBEdit> at the pleasure of LassoSoft, whose
hosting of the archives these many years we greatly appreciate.
