Is there a key combo to deselect sections from a "select all"
cmd-shift-A is "Select None", though OMM just now it's greyed out,
possibly because there's a service with that key combo [though I'm not
sure why that would grey out the menu item itself].

In any case, an alternative is any of the arrow keys, or (cmd-x then cmd-v).

How would that look? Say you have some text selected and highlighted
and then you'd want to to put BBEdit in a mode where you'd start
selecting and dehighlighting the highlighted text? I'd get confused...

Maybe it's easier to cmd-c cmd-n cmd-v and then delete the lines from
a copy of what you selected in the first place.

How would that look?
OK, here's the situation: I have a page of HTML that has been hit by
spammers exploiting the form tag.

The affected pages have 10,000 lines of porn spam which I need to
delete. There is HTML at the top and the bottom of the page to preserve.

It takes a very long time to scroll 10,000 lines of HTML to delete.

It would be much quicker to "select all" and then de-select the
header, footer and legitimate content.

Can this be done?

Thanks,

Dean

Yes, it can be done easily, just not with the method you want to do it.

Scroll to the top of the page. Click to place the insertion point
after the content you want to preserve, and just before the content
you want to delete.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. (Using the scrollbar, or by hitting
the end key, this will be instantaneous.)

Holding down the shift key, click at the end of the content you want
to delete.

1) Put your cursor at the last line of the top section of your good
HTML, just before the spam you want to delete.

2) Cmd-Shift-End (selects everything from the cursor to the end of the
document)

3) Shift-click at the point between where the spam ends and the
beginning of the bottom section of text you want to keep.

4) Delete.

At least that's how I'd do it.

Some options are:

Click after the first part. Scroll to the end (option clicking the
scroll bar field near the bottom, dragging the scroller to the
bottom, pressing the end key), then find the end and shift-click and
delete.

Click after the first part. Command-shift-downarrow to select to the
end of the file. Then scroll to the and shift click after the spam.
Delete.

Use a utility like PTH Pasteboard which gives you a clipboard history
(if you are using your Mac without a clipboard history, you are
really missing out alot). Select the top part, cut, select the
bottom part, cut, select all, delete, and then paste the two cut
pieces.

Use a second document. Select the top part, drag to the second
document. Select the bottom part, drag to the end of the second
document. Select all, delete. Select all of the second document and
drag back.

Enjoy,
Peter.

history (if you are using your Mac without a clipboard history, you

Another option for clipboard history is to just use BBEdit's built-in
Post by Peter N Lewis
BBEdit supports six separate clipboards. Each time you use the Cut
or Copy command, BBEdit automatically switches to the next clipboard
(wrapping back around to the first clipboard after the sixth). This
way, the last six things you copied or cut are always available for
pastingsort of a "clipboard history."
Sorry if you already knew about this feature. BBEdit's multiple
clipboards are easy to overlook. I've know about them for years and I
still keep forgetting to use them. :)

I had forgotten about this too since the last time that I have
used BBEdit, it is good to have that, and I think I'll probably
be using this in the future more often!

Hey Dean,
Post by Dean Matthews
It would be much quicker to "select all" and then de-select the
header, footer and legitimate content.
if there is legitimate content mixed in with your spam code,
then you probably will just want to create two editing windows
side by side. Then, take the legitimate code and select it, then
drag it into the other window. That's probably the easiest way.

Another way to remedy the situation is by using source control.
Then, you could take the current version, and compare it with
the previous version, reverting the previous version when it is
hit by spam.

Thanks to all for the many ways to skin this cat :)

Copying the good stuff to a new window is so obvious I'm embarrassed I
spent 10 minutes a page scrolling to cut the bad. Guess I was so angry
and determined to *destroy* the bad stuff I overlooked simply saving
the good stuff.

Now I can go either way - depending on my mood ;)

Another way is to use cmd-shift-C to copy and append the good parts to the clipboard. Might be a bit faster than moving each piece separately to a new doc.

I don't need select none, I need select "some" ;)
I don't know about BBEdit, but TextEdit allows non-contiguous
selections while holding down the Command key. You can also select all
and then hold the Command key to deselect portions.

However, it's a bit tricky because it seems you can only start a
deselection from unselected text. So you can select all, then hold
down Command and double-click a word to "punch a hole" in the
selection, and then do further deselections from there.

I know, it's convoluted, but it's better than nothing.

Yea, that's why I said "TextEdit allows non-contiguous
selections..." :) I don't think BBEdit currently supports this, but I
could be wrong. And if it doesn't, I sure wish it did.

BTW, non-contiguous selections seem to be a feature of NSTextView, so
any app that uses OS X's standard text view (e.g. Yojimbo) gains this
capability.

It takes a very long time to scroll 10,000 lines of HTML to delete.
You could select the first problematic line, jump to the bottom with
the End key, and then Shift-click to extend your selection to the
desired point. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

Yea, "Select None" is disabled on my system too. I even removed a
bunch of my services to make sure there was no conflict (although, I
think key combination conflicts are always resolved in favor of the
front-most app).

Is this a bug? Or is there something we're simply overlooking? Is it
enabled on anybody's system? If I don't hear anything, I'll open a
ticket with Bare Bones.

Incidentally, I'm running BBEdit 8.7.2 (260) on Mac OS X 10.5.2.

"Select None" is enabled for lists (where there is no insertion point,
either selected items or not.)

It is not enabled for text. Use the arrow keys to unambiguously place
the insertion point at one end of an existing selection in text.
